But I Don't Have A Real Studio!

Posted by Anna M. on 21st Aug 2015

Hi everyone! Today's blog topic is something that we hear quite a lot from our photographer customers who feel a bit timid when it comes to increasing what they charge for their photos.

Despite feeling confident in the quality of services that they are providing to their clients, many newborn photographers feel unable to charge more than a low-end fee simply because they work from home.

Ask yourself a few questions - Am I good at what I do? Are my clients consistently happy with my products? Do I get word-of-mouth referrals? And then ask yourself this one - Are my clients surprised at how "cheap" I am?

If you can honestly answer "yes" to these questions, it's time to give yourself a raise.

Oh, but you don't have a "real" studio? You work from your spare bedroom or lounge room?

So what! Would you be surprised to find out that more than 50% of newborn photographers work from their homes?

It's time to have more confidence in yourself and the amazing photos that you create, and be proud that you are able to do what you love in your own home.

No studio rental costs, no additional electricity and water bills, no travel costs - all of these things mean that you can spend more time taking photos and less time stressing!

Now it's time to work out your real income. Figure out your actual hourly rate by taking into consideration your time taking photos, editing, cost of props and printing, and anything else that goes into creating your photography products. What figure are you left with? Are you happy with that? Can you justify continuing to charge what you charge, or do you feel a bit deflated by the number you see?

Just because you don't have a studio in a fancy office building does not mean that you don't deserve to make a decent income from your newborn photography. The quality of photos that you give to your clients will speak for itself and leave them with no doubt that they have made a wise investment by choosing you for the job. Don't leave them any room for doubt - be confident in who you are, what you do, and where you do it!
